ok hey so we all love viva la revolution but i am feeling the frequency of our reaching out to the community is some what not to its maximal potentil so in this threat i would like to hear some ideas in which we could help out our community. i think this would be a green light operation where we are not preching jesus but living out our faith by actions in which might lead to people questioning why and that would be our chance to share about god.
so some ideas that have been sweet before that would be sweet to do again is: free car wash
and some ones i have tought would be sweet to do: -help people pack up after maret day? -advertise in edition a crew of people willing to help out with odd jobs
what are your ideas?

Good thread Victor - and some sweet ideas in here. One thing I'd add though - it'd be cool to see some ideas that aren't always so big - blessing our community can be done through individuals making decisions to live differently, not always needing a group to do it. I think that if we also try and make this a part of our own lives, it's kinda a bit more sustainable, and doesn't need someone organising stuff. The big stuff is good, but it's the small stuff that's just as important.
Few ideas of mine...
- Start picking up any rubbish you see around town, just when you're walking around. - Buy a drink for the guy who puts petrol in your car. Or just for someone walking around. - Get to know your next-door neighbours. - Use the skills that God has given you in a smart way - if you like building, help repair someones house. Music - teach music for free to people. Sport - coach a sports team. - Try and involve people in every task you do. - A big one - smile more at people who work in shops downtown, and talk to them - ask them questions. Treat them as more than a cog in a big machine.
Those are some of my ideas - lets see how they work!

I was thinking this week about how you can't be a community if you don't know people's names...and if we care about them then surely we want to get to know them as well as helping the... so here's a simple way to be part of community (which must come before / alongside helping the community)
- Every time you meet someone who is wearing a name-tag, use their name when you talk to them (why else would they be wearing a name-tag?) - If someone serves you and they are not wearing a name-tag, ask their name so you can thank them by name after they serve you.
Also, we have to be really careful when we say that helping people might give us the "chance to share about God"... surely we don't just help people so we can try to convert them. I think we would be better to say that by loving them we share the love of God with them, whether they know it or not.

Good call though Jimbo - I think as a church here in Cambridge, and as a Youth Community, we've got to learn what it means to love people because God is love. We don't need an agenda to show them the truth or whatever, or love them so they'll listen to us - but just love them to live out that call of being blessed to be a blessing. Even though I know you didn't mean it Victor, I think all of us here still hold onto that train of thought in a way - and I dunno, Jesus seemed to heal people because they were sick - not to manipulate them into believing in him. I dunno - maybe I need to learn more on all this though.

Well, last summer holidays when I had nothing to do, I thought i'd help out with the community too. I went to the Citizen's Advice Bureau and I asked if I could volunteer for something. They told me lots of places that needed help. I went to help at Treetown (a daycare place) but there were others. Maybe we could volunteer for something??? Just a thought...

Also thank the people how's job it is to clean the tables in food courts... No one should ever be taken for granted. Let them know that you appreciate the work they do. Cause somebody has to do it.

Even just telling someone they're doing a good job or whatever can make their day...then you really feel like someone actually notices and appreciates you.

Hey Krystle - I think Sam & Pauline have helped out at that camp a few times before, and really loved it. Real hard work, but super rewarding - I'll get Sam to write something about it.

How about sending some-one a hand-typed e-mail? Or even a hand-written letter? It's great when you recieve an e-mail that's not spam or a letter that's not your bank statement. I remember when I had a pen pal, I loved it! Now no-one sends any letters through the mail anymore (Well, nothing that's not official). I reckon that can really brighten up someone's day.

So true! Coz then when you open the letterbox and there's something with your name HANDWRITTEN and it's not like a creche timetable or something (not that I don't like helping out in the creche or anything) but you feel so loved! And it's so exciting! My best friend from Palmy sent me a small present and a letter one day for absolutely no reason and it like made my week...or maybe even my month, it was awesome lol.
